weekly workouts | october 8

Monday, October 8 – after a ho-hum weekend, vinyasa practice tonight centered on exactly what I needed to hear: Have faith. Take the first step even if you can’t see the entire staircase. Faith in myself, my life and my direction has been lacking lately; vinyasa tonight was that first positive step onwards and upwards.

Yoga stats: C2 vinyasa, 60 minutes.

yoga love.

Tuesday, October 9 – dang, I was tired this morning! After what seemed only a blink of sleep, Nick and I were up and en route to the pool, which was again sweltering. Hopefully they reset the heating system when the pool is closed for cleaning the next two days. I slogged through a 500-yard warm-up and 2 x 500-yard intervals (three with hand paddles, two without) and a 100-yard cool down. Not far, but I know more consistent swimming all fall and winter – even if it’s shorter distances – will help me be a faster swimmer come next tri season.

Swim stats: 1,600 yards, about 35 minutes.

Wednesday, October 10 – the only thing I wanted to do today was ride my bike… outside. A bit brisk – a whopping 52 degrees – but, wow, did I feel alive! It was great to be in the saddle, regardless of the temp. It’s only early October, but I’m already looking forward to summer cycling again! Anyway, Nick and I started together, riding down Summit to Ford bridge, where we split. I looped back down river road to Franklin bridge, the cathedral and home.

Bike stats: 18.32 miles, 1:03:28.

hot [pink] stuff.

Thursday, October 11 – tonight my sister and I heard Brené Brown lecture in Plymouth. She was incredible, and I can’t wait to start reading her latest book, Daring Greatly. Working on a post about the lecture…

Friday, October 12 – my day started on my mat, surrounded by harmonious breath. Bliss. Our teacher, Pegah (if you haven’t taken a class with her… do!), had us practice more challenging poses, like peacock and eight-angle… both are hard. It will take hours of practice before I’m bendy enough for the eight-angle arm balance; my hamstrings and hips just don’t open that way right now. While difficult, peacock is much more attainable in the short-term. Maybe by Christmas…?

Yoga stats: C2 vinyasa, 60 minutes.

Saturday, October 13 – grey, misty good morning! After waiting around about an hour to see if it would clear up – it didn’t – I bundled up and hopped on my bike. So glad I did, too, because despite the dreary weather, it ended up being a fantastic couple hours in the saddle.

Bike stats: 30.18 miles, 1:50:39.

Sunday, October 14 – how is it Sunday, and I haven’t ran this week?! After Nick left for a morning bike ride, I laced up for a quick run down Summit. While it felt good to be out, I never really found my running groove. Nonetheless, a solid four-miler with pretty consistent splits (all were right around eight-minute miles).

Run stats: 4.24 miles, 33:41, 7:57 min/mile pace.

About a half-hour after running, I balanced out at a vinyasa yoga class at the Grand Avenue studio. Becka lead a lovely practice centered around heart openers, back bends and hamstring stretches. My legs were happy!

Yoga stats: C2 vinyasa, 60 minutes.

Mid afternoon Nick and I made a quick trip to Gear West to drop off his bike for a pre ironman tune-up. Such a dangerous place… so many pretty bikes, so much sweet gear! And, I may have found my tri bike…!

wise words at gear west.

Weekly stats:

Swim 1,600 yards, 35 minutes
Bike 48.5 miles, 2:54:07
Run 4.24 miles, 33:41
Yoga three classes, 180 minutes

This week: Much the same as last week… the steamy yoga studio, morning swims, a couple solid runs, and – fingers crossed! – a couple nice days for some biking outside. How are you working out this week?

Have a fantastic week, friends!

  1. I did not make it to yoga last week and I know I need to make it happen this week. I must say, I’m a little jealous of your workout dedication!

    • I’d love to meet for yoga, Amine! Maybe we can get Hyedi to join us? 🙂

Mixing it up helps keep me from getting bored! Though I don’t think I’d ever tire of riding my bike…

      Thank you! 🙂

  3. That yoga class sounds amazing! And I am so excited for your tri bike 🙂 Did you watch streaming of Kona at all?

    October 15, 2012
    • Meeee, too! It’s not my dream DREAM project one speed concept, but it’s a pretty kick a$$ ride 🙂

Yes! Nick and I streamed it nearly all day (not sure why I didn’t write about it this week!). SO good! Someday I WILL race there 🙂 Did you watch it any of it?!

      • Well I can’t wait to see it once you purchase 🙂

        I didn’t! 😦 So sad.

        October 16, 2012
    • Oh, there will be a post about it once it happens 🙂

Shoot! I think one of the networks airs it later in the year, so you’ll be able to catch a condensed version of it on tv 🙂

spin, running, 4 weight training days, and bikram! I like to change it up.

    • Yes! Hold me accountable, dear!

Love your mix-up… which reminds me I still have yet to dust off the kettle bell…

  5. Way to rock out those workouts Erin! I’m back out running again, hoping it stays that way now!

Oh and all your yoga talk makes me miss it so much…bird of paradise was my go-to pose, loved that one!

    October 16, 2012
    • So glad to hear you’re back running, Carrisa! Good vibes your way that it continues 🙂

Love birds of paradise, too… still working straightening my leg once standing, but it’ll get there some day! Are you not able to practice anymore?

      October 16, 2012
      • Back in about June I made the decision to stop doing yoga. Multiple doctors at this point had told me that since I’m already hyper mobile (especially in my hips) stretching in yoga would only make that worse. So much for all that teacher training. HOWEVER, I am hopefully that I’ll make it back to sculpt classes in the future and maybe yoga later on 🙂

        October 17, 2012
    • Oh, sad. I hope you make it back to sculpt and some vinyasa soon! Have a you tried yin yoga (it’s only offered at the Edina studio)? It’s bendy, but more so static stretching… holding postures for 4-6 minutes.

  6. 52 degrees?! brrrrr that’s our winter lol We’ve had some pretty amazing weather lately and I can’t believe it. I actually got out for a whopping 26 miles on Saturday and it was awesome 🙂 I’ve also been loving yoga a lot lately; I’m trying to get more bendy too

    October 16, 2012
    • Brrrrr is right! I’d love some of your weather right now 🙂 Glad you got out for a solid right… there’s nothing better than biking bliss! Yoga is such a nice complement to cycling. Have you tried yin yoga? It’s heaven.
